In this brand new private orthopaedic clinic located in Montreal, you will be treated by Dr. Nadia Lachance, owner, orthopaedic and carpal tunnel surgeon.
An orthopaedic consultation is divided into three stages:
During the consultation, Dr. Nadia Lachance will examine your hands and ask you about their history, traumas, as well as the results of previous exams (MRI, X-Ray, etc.). After making a diagnosis, she will provide you with a treatment plan, including a possible carpal tunnel surgery.
In the palm of our hand, the carpal bones form a tunnel where the tendons and the median nerve are located. When it lacks space, the median nerve is compressed, which may cause pain, trouble sleeping and numbness, especially in the thumb, in the index and in the middle finger.
In the case of carpal tunnel syndrome, a hand surgery will consist of freeing the median nerve from its compression in the carpal tunnel, whatever the origin (inflammation, edema, etc.). By cutting the anterior annular ligament of the carpus, the surgical procedure allows to reduce the pressure exerted in the canal.
This surgery is also called carpal tunnel release surgery.
Open carpal tunnel surgery is effective in about 95% of cases and has been the baseline approach for carpal tunnel decompression for decades.
It allows for direct visualization of the tunnel and therefore potential treatment of lesions that may cause carpal tunnel syndrome.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is often caused by repetitive movements of the hand or wrist during professional activities or household chores.
It is also caused by certain sports activities (tennis, golf, cycling …), menopause or pregnancy, diseases such as osteoarthritis or arthritis, or accidents
Usually, carpal tunnel syndrome causes:
