Are you considering foot or knee surgery, or would you like to schedule an orthopaedic consultation regarding problems you have related to your lower limbs?
In this brand new private orthopaedic clinic located in Montreal, you will be treated by Dr. Nadia Lachance, owner, orthopaedic and foot and knee surgeon.
An orthopaedic consultation is divided into three stages:
During the consultation, Dr. Nadia Lachance will examine your feet or your knees and ask you about their history, traumas, as well as the results of previous exams (MRI, X-Ray, etc.). After making a diagnosis, she will provide you with a treatment plan, including a possible surgery.
Due to its specific position, the foot supports the body weight and plays a predominant role in propulsion, balance and shock absorption. It is complex because it includes 16 joints, 26 bones, 107 ligaments and 20 muscles (no less!). It is connected to the leg by the ankle.
The knee is an essential joint that includes 3 bones (femur, tibia and patella) and 2 joints. The fluidity of the knees movements is ensured by the cartilage that protects the joint by avoiding direct contact between the bone surfaces. Over the years and depending on the way it is used, the cartilage wears out more or less quickly despite the presence of synovial fluid which ensures its lubrication.
Here are the main cases in which you may require foot or knee surgery…
Are your toes so painful that you cannot put shoes on? If you have tried conservative treatments and haven’t noticed any improvement, surgery can correct this problem.
“Hallux” refers to the first toe or big toe. “Valgus” means a deviation towards the outside. “Hallux valgus” is the term used to refer to the infamous bunion! When this condition causes pain and makes it difficult to put shoes on, and when conservative treatments have been unsuccessful, surgery should be considered. This surgery consists in correcting the alignment. To do this, an osteotomy – a cutting of the bone – is done at the level of the first metatarsal. During recovery, it is possible to walk with an orthopedic sandal and generally to resume one’s activities gradually six weeks after the procedure.
Does your big toe hurt? You may have osteoarthritis in the metatarsophalangeal joint. This will cause pain, decreased movement and bumps or osteophytes in your big toe. Orthotics and infiltrations may help. If the pain persists and prevents you from moving, surgery may be the solution. Hallux rigidus is also called “osteoarthritis of the big toe”.
The Achilles tendon is one of the largest tendons in the human body. It is located at the back of the leg, next to the 3 calf muscles, and is attached to the heel bone, the calcaneus. It allows walking and the plantar flexion of the ankle (tiptoe). Inflammation can cause pain and even rupture of the tendon in case of trauma. A conservative treatment of this condition includes stretching, exercises and physiotherapy. Other treatments exist, such as PRP and radial shockwave therapy. If conservative treatments are unsuccessful, surgery may be necessary.
We all have two menisci – an inner and an outer meniscus. The menisci are located between the tibia and the femur. They are shock absorbers. Unfortunately, following a torsion or trauma, they can get torn. This causes a blockage or pain that can persist over time. In this case, an arthroscopy may be necessary: a camera is placed inside the knee for the purpose of removing part of the meniscus.
The most common diagnosis in case of a painful knee is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degeneration or wearing down of cartilage, which becomes thinner. The knee may be swollen (effusion or synovitis). Several treatments can help treat this condition. First of all, it is important to remain active! It is essential to maintain a healthy weight. A knee brace or an orthosis can also help, depending on the condition. Cortisone, viscosupplementation or PRP injections can also be recommended. Clinique CEO can assess what treatment is appropriate for you.
